$20 3% Loan of 1898 Spanish American War Bond. The Spanish-American War, which lasted from April 21, 1898, to December 10, 1898, had its roots in the internal explosion of the USS Maine in Havana Harbor, Cuba. This incident prompted the United States to intervene in the ongoing Cuban War of Independence. The war resulted in the United States emerging as a dominant force in the Caribbean region. As a consequence, the U.S. acquired Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Moreover, the war led to U.S. involvement in the Philippine Revolution, which ultimately culminated in the Philippine-American War.

The 19th century witnessed a significant decline in the Spanish Empire, while the United States transitioned from a newly formed nation to a rising power. Spain’s decline had been gradual, accelerating during the Napoleonic invasion. This invasion, in turn, sparked the independence of a significant portion of the American colonies. Subsequent political instability, including declarations of independence, revolutions, and civil wars, had a profound impact on Spain’s social and economic well-being.

In contrast, the United States experienced economic growth throughout the 19th century. It acquired territories such as Louisiana and Alaska through purchases, militarily achieved victories like the Mexican-American War, and welcomed a large influx of European immigrants. However, this progress was interrupted only by the American Civil War and the Reconstruction era.

A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
