Inv# HD1082   Bond
State(s): Delaware
Years: 1978

$100,000 5% Bond printed by Security-Columbian Banknote Company. Spiegel was an American direct marketing retailer established in 1865 by Joseph Spiegel. The company published a catalog similar to its competitors, Sears and Montgomery Ward, which showcased a variety of brands in apparel, accessories, and footwear, in addition to housewares, toys, tools, firearms, and electronics. Their brand portfolio included Newport News, Shape FX, and Old Kraftsman, among others. They also maintained physical retail locations. Spiegel issued its inaugural mail order catalog in 1905, and by 1925, the retailer boasted 10 million customers. Buyers from Spiegel attended fashion shows in Paris, bringing European fashion trends to American women. Following financial challenges in the early 2000s, the company was acquired by Patriarch Partners and shifted its focus to women's style and fashion products. The catalog was ultimately phased out in favor of digital marketing strategies. In 2019, the company website was taken down without prior notice, leading to the cessation of operations.

A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
