Specimen Stock printed by American Bank Note Company. UCCEL Corp, formerly known as University Computing Company ("UCC"), was a data processing service bureau located on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas. Established in 1963 by the Wyly brothers, Sam and Charles, Jr., the company underwent a name change in the mid-1980s under the leadership of Gregory Liemandt, who was appointed CEO by the majority stockholder, Walter Haefner, a Swiss national associated with Careal Holding AG of Zürich. By 1972, UCCEL had established a mid-sized data center in Troy, Michigan, along with a large facility in Arlington, Texas, utilizing advanced IBM/360 and later IBM/370 processors. UCCEL's notable achievement was the development of UCC-1/TMS (Tape Management System), a software solution designed for managing tape libraries within an OS/MVS operating system environment.
In 1980, the company introduced its second major product, UCC-7, a job scheduler that became its most profitable offering. The suite comprising UCC-1, UCC-7, and UCC-11 (a batch job rerun/restart add-on) dominated the market for tape management and job scheduling solutions. In 1986, UCCEL Corporation acquired Cambridge Systems Group, Inc., which was known for marketing SKK, Inc.'s leading ACF2 mainframe security product. However, in June 1987, UCCEL faced an unexpected acquisition by its main competitor, Computer Associates, which aggressively marketed rival products such as CA-Dynam/TLMS (tape management), CA-Scheduler, and batch job scheduling solutions originally developed by Capex Corporation, including their flagship products "Optimizer" and "TLMS," as well as CA-Top Secret for security and mainframe discretionary access control.
Stock and Bond Specimens are made and usually retained by a printer as a record of the contract with a client, generally with manuscript contract notes such as the quantity printed. Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
