Universal City Studios LLC, operating under the name Universal Pictures or simply Universal, is an American film production and distribution entity owned by NBCUniversal, a subsidiary of Comcast. Established in 1912 by Carl Laemmle, Mark Dintenfass, Charles O. Baumann, Adam Kessel, Pat Powers, William Swanson, David Horsley, Robert H. Cochrane, and Jules Brulatour, Universal holds the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating film studio in the United States; it ranks as the fifth oldest in the world, following Gaumont, Pathé, Titanus, and Nordisk Film; and it is recognized as the oldest major film studio in the context of the American cinema, commonly referred to as "Hollywood," regarding the overall film market. The studio's facilities are situated in Universal City, California, while its corporate headquarters are based in New York City. In 1962, the studio was purchased by MCA, which was subsequently rebranded as NBCUniversal in 2004. Universal Pictures is affiliated with the Motion Picture Association (MPA) and was recognized as one of the "Little Three" major studios during the golden age of Hollywood.
