The 1940’s Disney Certificate for Purchasing War Bonds was a unique premium created by the United States Treasury War Finance Committee to promote the sale of savings bonds during and after World War II. Authorized by Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr., the initiative aimed to encourage parents and grandparents to purchase financial securities in the names of children under 12 years old through the “Bonds for Babies” program. Although often mistaken for actual financial debt instruments, these vibrant documents held no cash value. Instead, they served as commemorative tokens of appreciation, acknowledging a family’s civilian contribution to the military effort.

To make the war finance drives appealing to young families, Disney artists designed a colorful border featuring 22 iconic animated characters. The design included beloved figures like Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy, Pinocchio, and the Seven Dwarfs. The physical certificates were exclusively produced by two authorized security printers: the U.S. Government Printing Office and the Homer H. Boelter Printing Company. Today, authentic 1940’s certificates are highly sought-after artifacts in the scripophily and Disneyana collecting communities.

A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
