Edward D. “Ted” Walker (1937–2017) was a renowned British maritime artist celebrated for his meticulous oil paintings of historic and contemporary vessels. Born into a lineage of seafarers dating back to 1617, Walker channeled his heritage into a career spanning over five decades, establishing himself as a leading authority on naval authenticity. Perhaps his most notable contribution is his role as the official artist for the RMS Titanic International Artefacts Exhibitions. In this capacity, he produced a definitive series of eighteen paintings that meticulously documented the ship’s journey from construction to its tragic end. Walker’s work is characterized by its “significant historical document” quality, which has earned him commissions from prestigious clients such as the UK Royal Mail and the Cunard Line.
Throughout his prolific career, Walker’s portfolio expanded to encompass a diverse range of subjects. From Civil War-era blockade runners and Irish famine relief ships to modern luxury liners like the Queen Mary 2, his art showcases his versatility and deep understanding of maritime history. His work has been featured prominently in royal, public, and private collections worldwide, with several pieces displayed aboard the Cunard fleet. Beyond his artistic endeavors, Walker made significant contributions to the maritime community as an author. He published works such as Sea Liverpool: The Maritime Art of Edward D Walker and TITANIC, which combined his visual storytelling with historical commentary. Walker remained actively engaged in his craft until his passing, leaving behind a legacy of artwork that continues to serve as iconic imagery for maritime history and education.
