In relation to the Styrian Water Power and Electricity Co., Energie Steiermark is an Austrian energy supply company. The company, with its subsidiaries and holdings, is active throughout Austria in the fields of electricity, gas and heating, with a focus on Styria, as well as internationally.

Energie Steiermark's subsidiary, Energie Steiermark Kunden GmbH, is responsible for sales, and Energienetze Steiermark GmbH for the operation, maintenance and expansion of the network. In addition, Energie Steiermark has subsidiaries and holdings in the Czech Republic, Slovenia and Germany as well as in Slovakia via the subsidiary Stefe SK, which achieved sales of EUR 52 million in 2008 with 250 employees, secured the heat supply for 70,000 apartments and public buildings was the market leader in the Slovak district heating market with a market share of around 9%. Furthermore, Energie Steiermark holds 49% of the shares in Energie Graz.

In 2019, Energie Steiermark sold 16,871 GWh of electricity, 12,596 GWh of natural gas and 1,968 GWh of district heating and achieved a turnover of 1.373 billion euros with 1,854 employees.

Energie Steiermark AG was founded in 1996 as the parent company of the State of Styria for its Styrian Wasserkraft- und Elektrizitäts-AG (STEWEAG), Styrian district heating and Styrian district gas. STEWEAG was originally founded in 1921 to expand the Mur and was later merged with Steiermärkische Elektrizitäts-Gesellschaft (STEG) to form STEWEAG-STEG. STEG was the electricity pioneer in the Graz area and, when it was founded in 1910, took over the Lebring and Peggau plants, both built in the 1900s.

In 1998, the French energy supplier Électricité de France (EDF) and the natural gas company Gaz de France (GDF) took part in Energie Steiermark and entered into strategic partnerships. Together they held 25 percent (plus one share). The province of Styria continued to hold the remaining 75 percent (minus one share). In June 2009, Gaz de France withdrew its shares from Energie Steiermark. These were then taken over by the EDF, whereby they held the entire minority share.

After it was founded in 1996, Energie Steiermark (ESTAG) expanded and gradually expanded its investment portfolios at home and abroad. Through acquisitions, holdings and partnerships with, among others, Energie Graz, Pichler Werke, Feistritzwerke and Our Wasserkraft, Energie Steiermark was able to increase the number of customers in the electricity business from around 150,000 to around 600,000.

In 2002 Energie Steiermark largely withdrew from electricity production. As part of a repositioning, the company is focusing on the core business of network operation, trading and sales in all energy sectors. The power plants were all handed over to Verbund AG (VERBUND), which had created several subsidiaries for this purpose (Verbund Hydro Power, Thermal Power, etc.). The Verbund subsidiary STEG and the state-owned STEWEAG were merged to form STEWEAG-STEG GmbH (SSG) (this was finally dissolved in 2014 and embedded in the new division-oriented group structure). The two groups ESTAG and VERBUND were proportionally closely interwoven.

From 2003, the party-politically dominated management of the company came into the focus of public prosecutor's investigations due to ongoing mismanagement and enrichment allegations, which triggered the cause known to the Austrian public as the "ESTAG scandal". The legal proceedings were discontinued in October 2006 with no result.

Christian Purrer has been the company's board spokesman since April 2012. Among other things, he is responsible for the areas of generation, sales, technology, district heating, customer service, material and facility management and information technology. Olaf Kieser also started as director in April 2012 and moved to Stadtwerke Stuttgart in April 2016.

On April 1, 2016, Martin Graf became Director of the Management Board of Energie Steiermark. Among other things, he is responsible for the areas of finance, controlling, networks, law and human resources. Together with board spokesman Christian Purrer, he is also responsible for communication, strategy, internal auditing, business development and innovation management. Until March 2016, Martin Graf headed Energie-Control Austria as a member of the board. In this role he was responsible for the (network) tariffs and regulation, market and competition supervision, economics, end customer services and statistics, green electricity and energy efficiency.

In November 2015, the Styrian regional government unanimously approved the sale of the Energie-Steiermark shares in EDF International S.A. to the Australian financial investor Macquarie.

Styria was inhabited by Celtic tribes. After its conquest by the Romans, the eastern part of what is now Styria was part of Pannonia, while the western one was included in Noricum. During the Barbarian invasions, it was conquered or crossed by the Visigoths, the Huns, the Ostrogoths, the Rugii, and the Lombards. Slavs under the domination of the Avars settled in the valleys around 600. At the same time, Bavarians under Frankish domination began to expand their area to the south and east, ultimately absorbing the Slavic population.

In 1180, Styria separated from the Duchy of Carinthia and became a Duchy of its own; in 1192 the Austrian Duke Leopold V became also Duke of Styria. Later, Styria formed the central part of Inner Austria.

Styria developed culturally and economically under Archduke John of Austria between 1809 and 1859.

In 1918, after World War I, it was divided into a northern section (forming what is the current Austrian state), and a southern one, called Lower Styria, now inhabited by Slovenians, and which was annexed to Yugoslavia, and later became part of Slovenia. As a result of the turbulence of the two world wars, the German-speaking population of Lower Styria, which had been concentrated in the cities, migrated out of the region or was expelled.
