St. Louis, Missouri World's Fair of 1904 envelope. So Colorful! Great!

The 1904 World’s Fair, officially known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, was a grand international exhibition held in St. Louis, Missouri, to commemorate the centennial of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase. Spanning from April to December 1904, the fair transformed over 1,200 acres of Forest Park into a magnificent neoclassical “White City,” boasting nearly 1,500 buildings and intricate landscaping that showcased American progress, industrialization, and imperial power at the dawn of the 20th century. Attracting approximately 20 million visitors, it also hosted the inaugural Summer Olympics in the United States and served as a global platform for technological advancements, including innovations in electricity, transportation, and agriculture.

While celebrated as a pinnacle of cultural and technological exchange—renowned for popularizing foods like the ice cream cone and iced tea—the 1904 World’s Fair also reflected the racial prejudices prevalent during that era. The exposition featured controversial anthropological exhibits, commonly referred to as “living zoos,” which displayed indigenous people from the Philippines and other regions in staged, “primitive” settings to justify American imperialism. Despite these troubling and discriminatory aspects, the fair left an indelible mark on history, transforming St. Louis into a major city and leaving behind enduring structures such as the Palace of Fine Arts, which now houses the Saint Louis Art Museum.
