Soundesign Corporation, initially founded as Realtone Electronics in 1956, rose to prominence as a prominent manufacturer of consumer electronics, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s. The company’s journey began with the sale of pocket transistor radios and cigarette lighters. In 1961, Realtone went public on the American Stock Exchange. In 1963, they introduced the Soundesign brand, offering a more upscale line of audio products such as clock radios and stereo systems. The company officially adopted the name Soundesign in 1968 and gained recognition for its affordable and accessible home and portable electronics, including cassette recorders, stereo systems, and innovative products like the first stereo rack system in 1973 and the first telephone clock radio in 1983. Soundesign’s products were widely available through discount department stores like KMart and Montgomery Ward, making them a popular choice for budget-conscious consumers seeking entry-level audio equipment.

However, despite its success in the mass market, the Soundesign brand gradually declined as the company evolved and ventured into new product areas. In 1982, Soundesign became a privately held company and was subsequently renamed SDI Technologies in 1994, reflecting a shift in focus. As SDI Technologies, the company expanded its offerings beyond traditional audio equipment, launching divisions like KIDdesigns for youth electronics and introducing innovative products such as nature sound alarm clocks and the popular iHome brand for iPod electronics. While the original Soundesign brand may have faded from prominence, its legacy continues as the foundation upon which SDI Technologies built its later successes and diversified its product portfolio.

Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
