Slavery related Appraisal of 17 African Americans - 1848 dated Americana
Inv# AM2429Handwritten estate appraisal document listing 17 African Americans by name, age and value. Small holes. The term slave was adopted into Middle English from the Old French esclave, which ultimately traces its origins back to the Byzantine Greek terms ??????? (sklábos) or ?????????? (ésklab?nos). According to a prevalent perspective that has been recognized since the 18th century, the Byzantine ????????? (Sklábinoi) and ?????????? (Ésklab?noí), which were derived from a self-designation of a Slavic tribe, *Slov?ne, evolved into ??????? and ?????????? (Late Latin scl?vus) signifying 'prisoner of war slave' or simply 'slave' during the 8th or 9th century, as they frequently found themselves captured and enslaved. Nevertheless, this interpretation has faced challenges since the 19th century. Another modern theory suggests that the Medieval Latin scl?vus, through *scyl?vus, originates from the Byzantine terms ?????? (sk?lá?, skylá?) or ??????? (sk?leú?, skyleú?), which mean "to strip the enemy (who has been killed in battle)" or "to seize booty / extract spoils of war." This hypothesis has also been met with criticism.
