Old Spice is a renowned American brand that specializes in male grooming products such as aftershaves, deodorants, antiperspirants, shampoos, body washes, shaving creams, and soaps. It is produced by Procter & Gamble. The brand was introduced as Early American Old Spice by William Lightfoot Schultz's soap and toiletries company, Shulton Inc., in 1937. Initially aimed at women, the men's line was launched just before Christmas of the same year. Originally, Old Spice products were created by the Shulton Company, established in 1934 by Schultz. A buyer from Bullock's in Los Angeles alerted Schultz to the rising trend of colonial American-style furniture, which was influenced by the recent opening of Colonial Williamsburg. Schultz concluded that a cosmetics line themed around Early Americana could also be successful. The packaging design drew inspiration from the Metropolitan Museum of Art's collection of early American artifacts, while the fragrance was inspired by his mother's potpourri, leading to the creation of the first Old Spice product in 1937, a women's fragrance named Early American Old Spice. Its positive reception prompted the introduction of Old Spice for men in 1938.
