The Seattle & San Francisco Railway & Navigation Co. (SSFR&N) was established in 1899 and commenced operations in 1901. Its primary focus was on transporting coal and other freight from Seattle to San Francisco, Honolulu, and other Pacific destinations. To support these operations, the SSFR&N strategically acquired substantial coal fields, docks, and warehouses along the shores of Puget Sound and Elliott Bay in the Seattle area. In fact, an ordinance passed in 1903 granted the company the authority to construct and maintain railway tracks along portions of Railroad Avenue and connecting streets in West Seattle.

This venture emerged during a period of rapid expansion and intense competition among railroads vying to establish connections and exert influence in the Pacific Northwest. Seattle itself had a strong desire to secure transcontinental rail links to foster its growth as a prominent urban and economic center. While the direct and long-term impact of the SSFR&N in this competitive landscape may necessitate further historical research, its operations as a coal hauler and freight carrier undoubtedly contributed to the commercial and industrial development of the region.

Puget Sound, an inlet of the Pacific Ocean and part of the Salish Sea, is a complex estuarine system located along the northwestern coast of Washington State. It connects to the open Pacific Ocean via the Strait of Juan de Fuca, with Admiralty Inlet serving as the major connection and Deception Pass and Swinomish Channel as the minor ones.

Elliott Bay, a part of the Central Basin region of Puget Sound, extends southeastward between West Point and Alki Point. Founded in the 1850s, Seattle has since grown to encompass the entire waterway. The Puget Sound provides a crucial link to the Pacific Ocean, serving as a key element of the city’s economy. This connection has enabled the Port of Seattle to become one of the busiest ports in the United States.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
