Inv# SE4113   Specimen Stock
State(s): New York
Color: Green and Black

Specimen Stock printed by Security-Columbian Banknote Company. Byrd Cloth is a fabric akin to Grenfell Cloth, designed by Harris Thurston in 1934 and extensively marketed by Antarctic explorer Richard Byrd. This material was recognized for its windproof qualities, while its weave permitted some air circulation, facilitating sweat evaporation from the body instead of allowing it to freeze against the skin. It was intended to serve as a substitute for the traditionally used fur-lined parkas in cold-weather exploration and was later found to be particularly suitable for World War II military uniforms due to its ability to absorb less sweat, repel mosquito bites, and its significantly lighter weight compared to the cotton twill uniforms utilized by soldiers in the Pacific theater. Byrd Cloth was trademarked by Reeves Brothers, Inc. in New York in 1975, with the trademark expiring in 1996. Composed of 100% cotton, it is recognized for its windproof and water-resistant properties, and as of 2018, it remains in use for cold-weather apparel.
