Established in 1981 by Paul Shipman and Gordon Bowker, Redhook Ale Brewery stands as a pioneering force in the American craft beer movement. Commencing operations in a repurposed transmission shop within Seattle’s Ballard neighborhood, the brewery garnered a dedicated following through its distinctive “banana beer” before introducing its influential Redhook ESB in 1987. Over the ensuing decades, it emerged as one of the pioneering craft breweries to achieve national distribution and establish a bicoastal presence, operating substantial production facilities in Woodinville, Washington, and Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

Following a series of corporate transformations, including a longstanding partnership with Anheuser-Busch and membership within the Craft Brew Alliance, the brand underwent a full acquisition by AB InBev in 2020. Subsequently, it was acquired by Tilray Brands in 2023. Presently, Redhook operates as a subsidiary of Tilray, emphasizing its Pacific Northwest heritage through product offerings such as the renowned Big Ballard IPA series and its newer Redhook 81 light lager. Although the brewery recently closed its Seattle Brewlab on Capitol Hill in mid-2025, it retains its prominence within the craft industry, with plans to establish a new physical location.
