The Potomac Electric Power Company (Pepco), a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Illinois-based Exelon Corporation, is an American electric utility company. Exelon is the largest electric utility company in the U.S. based on the number of customers it serves. Pepco’s primary function is to transmit and distribute electricity, not generate it. It serves approximately 919,000 customers in the District of Columbia and major portions of Montgomery and Prince George’s counties in Maryland. Pepco maintains the local power lines, substations, and transformers and operates under the regulation of the Public Service Commissions of Maryland and the District of Columbia.

Pepco’s history dates back to its incorporation in 1896, when it initially provided street lighting for Washington, D.C. Over the decades, it grew alongside the Washington metropolitan area and eventually became an independent, publicly traded company in the late 1940s. In 2016, the company underwent a significant change when it was acquired by Exelon. This acquisition, which took nearly two years, faced initial opposition from local officials and consumer advocacy groups. As an Exelon company, Pepco is part of a larger family of utilities that includes Baltimore Gas and Electric (BGE), PECO, and Delmarva Power.
