Phillips Petroleum Company, an American oil company founded in 1917, expanded its operations into petroleum refining, marketing, transportation, natural gas gathering, and the chemicals sectors. Notably, Phillips Petroleum made history on December 23, 1969, when it discovered oil in the North Sea, establishing the Ekofisk position. In 2002, Conoco Inc. merged with Phillips Petroleum, forming ConocoPhillips, which became the third-largest integrated energy company and the second-largest refining company in the United States. The company relocated its headquarters to Houston.

In 2012, ConocoPhillips underwent a significant restructuring, splitting into two distinct companies. The legacy company retained its original name while spinning off the midstream and downstream portions of its business. The new company, which acquired the refinery, chemical, and pipeline assets previously held by ConocoPhillips, adopted the name Phillips 66. This name holds sentimental value as it was the brand name and trademark used by the original Phillips Petroleum from 1930 until the 2002 merger with ConocoPhillips.

The Phillips Petroleum Company was established on June 13, 1917, by brothers Lee Eldas (“L.E.�) Phillips and Frank Phillips, from Bartlesville, Oklahoma, United States. Their younger brother, Waite Phillips, was the benefactor of Philmont Scout Ranch. Initially headquartered in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, the company’s journey has been marked by significant milestones and contributions to the energy industry.
