Judge Ashbel Green was a prominent attorney in New York and a cofounder of the New York Bar Association. He was the grandson of Rev. Ashbel Green, former president of Princeton University.

Green's large estate on the east side of Engle Street was north of Oak Street. His original home was destroyed by fire in 1880, but he rebuilt it. The Green property, known as Sunninghill Farm, stayed in his daughters' families - the Thachers and the Evans - throughout the 1920s.

Green's wife, Louisa, was a major contributor to the early Presbyterian Church in town.

Green built the stone manse across from the church to honor his wife in memoriam.

He was the general counsel for the New-York Central Railroad, and was at one time a trustee of Princeton University.

He was a member of the Bar Association of the City of New-York, the Law Institute and the Transportation, University and Riding clubs, and an alumnus of Princeton University.

His son, Ashbel Green, jr. lives at No. 6 East Ninth-st., this city.
