Specimen Stock printed by American Bank Note Company. Mohawk Industries is a flooring manufacturer located in Calhoun, Georgia, USA. The company produces flooring products for both residential and commercial uses in North America, as well as residential uses in Europe. Its manufacturing portfolio includes soft flooring products such as broadloom carpet, carpet tiles, carpet cushion, and rugs, along with hard flooring products like ceramic and porcelain tiles, natural stone, and hardwood flooring. Additionally, Mohawk offers laminate flooring, sheet vinyl, luxury vinyl tile, natural stone, and quartz countertops.Â
In Europe, the company also manufactures and sells insulation, panels, and mezzanine flooring. Mohawk employs 43,000 individuals across operations in Australia, Brazil, Canada, Europe, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Russia, and the United States. As a Fortune 500 company, Mohawk stands as the largest flooring manufacturer in the world. William Shuttleworth, along with his four sons, arrived in the United States in 1875 and established a carpet mill in the Hudson Valley. Following the death of William Shuttleworth, the four sons relocated to Amsterdam, New York in 1878, where they took control of an unoccupied factory. The company was incorporated as the Shuttleworth Brothers Company in 1902.Â
In 1920, the company changed its name to Mohawk Carpet Mills (or Mohawk Mills for short) after merging with McCleary, Wallin, and Crouse, another mill based in Amsterdam. This merger allowed it to become the only weaver in the country to provide a complete line of domestic carpets, and it also pioneered the industry's first textured design and sculptured weave. In 1956, Mohawk Carpet Mills merged with Alexander Smith, Inc., forming Mohasco Corporation, which was substantial enough to be included in the inaugural Fortune 500 rankings. Mohasco encountered competition from emerging tufted carpet operations in Georgia that utilized synthetic fibers like nylon and polyester, in contrast to the traditional wool used in woven carpets. To adapt to the evolving industry, Mohasco gradually shifted its manufacturing operations southward into the Carolinas and ultimately Georgia.
In 1963, the company began to focus on furniture manufacturing by means of acquisitions. Carpet production at the Amsterdam facility ceased by 1968, and the final corporate offices departed by 1987. In 1988, Mohasco was acquired by MHS Holdings in a leveraged buyout, leading to the separation of the company's carpet division from Mohasco to establish Mohawk Industries.
