Henry Anson was the first European settler in the area now known as Marshalltown. In April 1851, Anson discovered what he referred to as "the prettiest place in Iowa." He constructed a log cabin on a high point situated between the Iowa River and Linn Creek. A plaque located at 112 West Main Street commemorates the site of this cabin. In 1853, Anson named the town Marshall, in honor of Marshall, Michigan, where he had previously resided.
The town was renamed Marshalltown in 1862 due to the existence of another Marshall in Henry County (which changed its name to Wayland in 1880). With the assistance of Potawatomi chief Johnny Green, Anson was able to convince early settlers to remain in the region. During the mid-1850s, Anson contributed land for the construction of a county courthouse, while local residents provided financial support for the building's development.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
