Ira J. Bell and Company left an indelible mark on the early 20th-century history of Pecos, Texas. They bridged the gap between the region’s ambitious agricultural era and its sudden transformation into oil country. In 1905, Ira J. Bell joined the Dixie Irrigation Company, a prominent Chicago syndicate with the ambitious goal of constructing the largest irrigation canal network in North America across Reeves County. However, the irrigation project faced challenges and ultimately collapsed by 1914 due to severe droughts and changes in upstream water flow. Despite this setback, Bell remained committed to the community. By 1919, he had established a strong presence in the town, and the Ira J. Bell and Company logo became a recognizable fixture among the storefronts along Main Street.

As the agricultural dream faded, the company successfully adapted to the burgeoning West Texas oil industry. In 1919, Bell reorganized his local interests and formed a specialized oilfield trust called the Dixieland Syndicate. This strategic move paid off handsomely in 1920 when the company struck oil at an astonishingly shallow depth of 658 feet. This monumental discovery, known as the “Bell Well,” sparked a massive wildcatting boom that attracted investment capital from across the United States. Although the trap ultimately proved to be isolated, leading most operators to abandon the immediate area in favor of more promising fields by 1922, the enterprise solidified Ira J. Bell and Company’s reputation as daring pioneers in early Texas oil exploration.
