Inv# FM1080 Foreign Paper Money Cat# P-79aForeign Paper Money. Arms and Lempira/Ruins of Copan.
The Honduran 1 Lempira note, specifically the P-79a variant dated 2000, is a standard banknote issued by the Central Bank of Honduras. The lempira currency was introduced in 1931 to replace the Honduran peso, named after the 16th-century Lenca chieftain Lempira. Lempira led the indigenous resistance against Spanish conquistadors. This particular 2000 series note measures approximately 156 x 67 mm and is printed on paper, continuing a design tradition that honors the nation’s pre-colonial and colonial heritage.
The obverse of the P-79a note features a prominent portrait of Cacique Lempira on the right and the Honduran coat of arms on the left. The reverse side showcases the world-renowned Mayan ruins of Copán, specifically the ancient ball court and the Hieroglyphic Stairway, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage sites. The 2000 issue, printed by Thomas De La Rue, is recognized for its deep red color palette and intricate multicolor underprints. These underprints serve both aesthetic and anti-counterfeiting purposes for collectors.
