Jacksonville holds the distinction of being the most populous city in Florida and, as of 2020, the largest city by area in the contiguous United States. It serves as the seat of Duval County, which consolidated with the city government in 1968. This consolidation significantly expanded Jacksonville's size and incorporated the majority of its metropolitan population within the city limits. As of 2020, the population of Jacksonville stands at 949,611, ranking it as the 12th most populous city in the United States, the most populous city in the Southeast, and the largest city in the South outside of Texas. The Jacksonville metropolitan area, with a population of 1,605,848, is recognized as Florida's fourth-largest metropolitan region.
Situated along the banks of the St. Johns River in the First Coast region of northeast Florida, Jacksonville is approximately 25 miles (40 km) south of the Georgia state line and 328 miles (528 km) north of Miami. The Jacksonville Beaches communities are located along the nearby Atlantic coast. The region was originally inhabited by the Timucua people and became notable in 1564 as the site of the French colony of Fort Caroline, one of the earliest European settlements in what is now the continental United States. During British rule, a settlement developed at the narrow point of the river where cattle crossed, known as Wacca Pilatka to the Seminole and Cow Ford to the British. A platted town was established in 1822, following the United States' acquisition of Florida from Spain, and was named in honor of Andrew Jackson, the first military governor of the Florida Territory and the seventh President of the United States.
