Emerson's Bromo-Seltzer Inc. was a holding company created in 1929 to oversee Isaac E. Emerson's drug and glass manufacturing businesses. The original company, Emerson Drug Company, was founded in 1890 and produced Bromo-Seltzer, a headache and hangover remedy that was discontinued due to its original use of toxic bromides. Today, the company's legacy lives on through the historic Bromo-Seltzer Arts Tower in Baltimore, which was once home to the manufacturing operations.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
