Elgin National Watch Company, founded in 1864 in Elgin, Illinois, initially operated as the National Watch Company. Spearheaded by a group of visionary Chicago businessmen, including the renowned merchant Potter Palmer, the company aimed to challenge the East Coast watchmakers’ dominance by producing high-quality, precise timepieces in the American Midwest. Elgin revolutionized the industry by pioneering mass-production techniques that utilized interchangeable, machine-made parts, a stark departure from the hand-crafted methods prevalent in Europe. This innovation significantly reduced production costs, ensured remarkable consistency, and made reliable pocket watches accessible to the general public. By the late 19th century, Elgin’s expansive factory complex had become the largest of its kind globally, solidifying Elgin’s reputation as a powerhouse of industrial manufacturing.

Throughout the 20th century, Elgin successfully transitioned into the production of wristwatches and played a pivotal role in shaping global history. During World War I and World War II, the company strategically shifted its manufacturing capabilities to support the United States military, producing highly accurate chronometers, altimeters, and military-grade watches for soldiers and aviators. However, the post-war era witnessed fierce competition from cheaper foreign imports, particularly from Switzerland and later Japan. Despite efforts to diversify and modernize, Elgin struggled to maintain its market share amidst these shifting global dynamics. Consequently, the iconic Illinois factory was permanently closed in 1964 and subsequently demolished, marking the end of an era. Although the original manufacturing giant ceased operations, the Elgin brand name endures today through subsequent licensing and acquisitions, continuing to serve as a symbol of America’s golden age of horology.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
