10 Sucres, P-114b. The Sucre, Ecuador’s currency from 1884 to 2000, had an ISO code of ECS. It was subdivided into 10 decimos and 100 centavos. Named after Latin American political leader Antonio José de Sucre, the Sucre was replaced by the US dollar due to the 1998-99 financial crisis. On March 22, 1884, the Ecuadorian peso was renamed Sucre and linked to the silver standard. Initially, the Sucre was tied to 22.5 grams of fine silver (equivalent to 5 LMU francs). Outdated coins were phased out between 1887 and 1892, leaving only the silver-backed coins in circulation.
