The Pennsylvania Packet and the General Advertiser was an American newspaper established in 1771, which became the first successful daily newspaper in the United States in 1784. Founded by John Dunlap as a weekly publication in late 1771, it was based in Philadelphia, except during the British occupation from 1777 to 1778, when it was published in Lancaster. David C. Claypoole later became a partner with Dunlap. On September 21, 1784, the newspaper transitioned to daily publication and was renamed the Pennsylvania Packet and Daily Advertiser. The newspaper later underwent several name changes, dropping the Pennsylvania Packet prefix in 1791 and becoming Dunlap's American Daily Advertiser (1791–1793), Dunlap and Claypoole's American Daily Advertiser (1793–1795), and finally Claypoole's American Daily Advertiser (1796-1800).
