Copperweld Steel Co. - Specimen Stock Certificate

Inv# SE3308   Specimen Stock
State(s): Pennsylvania

Specimen Stock printed by American Bank Note Company. Copperweld is an American corporation located in Fayetteville, Tennessee, with a management office situated in Brentwood, Tennessee. The company specializes in producing wire and stranded electrical cables made from its proprietary Copperweld brand copper-clad steel (CCS) and copper-clad aluminum (CCA). Beyond its operations in the United States, Copperweld also operates a manufacturing facility in Telford, England, and a distribution center in Liège, Belgium. The inception of a permanent metallurgical bond between copper and steel can be traced back to 1915, when a team of engineers—S. E. Bramer, Jacob Roth, F. R. S. Kaplan, Simon Loeb, and William Smith, Sr.—developed this innovation in Rankin, Pennsylvania. Initially created through a molten weld process, their patented CCS wire, marketed under the Copperweld brand, quickly became a preferred alternative to solid copper wire in various conductor applications, especially in scenarios where the ductility of copper was inadequate or where the tensile strength of steel was necessary. The initial application of this technology was in watch springs, where the copper cladding served to prevent corrosion. The company was originally established as the Copper-Clad Steel Company but rebranded to the Copperweld Steel Company in 1924. In 1927, it relocated to a former axe manufacturing facility in Glassport, Pennsylvania. Copperweld Steel went public for the first time in 1929, just prior to the onset of the Great Depression, although its shares were later withdrawn.

Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
