Founded in the late 19th century, the Continental Coal Company played a significant role in Scranton, Pennsylvania’s industrial landscape during the “King Coal” era. Operating in the Lackawanna Valley, it extracted anthracite coal, fueling steel mills and heating millions of homes along the East Coast. Its major collieries, like the Continental Shaft, became local landmarks. Like many companies, it relied on railroads, particularly the Delaware, Lackawanna & Western Railroad, to efficiently transport high-quality coal to urban markets.

Despite its success, the company faced the challenges of mining life and the decline of the industry. Labor strikes for safer conditions and fair wages, as well as the dangers of deep-shaft mining, were recurring issues. By the mid-20th century, the demand for anthracite declined, leading to reduced operations. Today, while the company’s physical structures are gone, its legacy lives on through the Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour, where visitors can explore the original Continental Mine site and experience Scranton’s industrial past.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
