Carson City is an autonomous city and serves as the capital of the state of Nevada in the United States. According to the 2020 census, its population stood at 58,639, ranking it as the sixth most populous city in the state. A significant portion of the population resides in Eagle Valley, located on the eastern side of the Carson Range, which is a segment of the Sierra Nevada, approximately 30 miles (50 km) south of Reno. The city derives its name from the mountain man Kit Carson. Initially, it functioned as a stop for immigrants heading to California, but it evolved into a city following the discovery of the Comstock Lode, a notable silver strike in the nearby mountains. Since Nevada achieved statehood in 1864, Carson City has been its capital; for a considerable part of its history, it was a key point for the Virginia and Truckee Railroad, although the railway tracks were dismantled in 1950. Prior to 1969, Carson City was the administrative center of Ormsby County. In that year, the state legislature dissolved the county and incorporated its territory into a new city charter, creating the Consolidated Municipality of Carson City. This consolidation expanded the city limits westward across the Sierra Nevada to the California state line, which runs through the center of Lake Tahoe. Similar to other independent cities in the United States, Carson City is classified as a county-equivalent for census purposes.
