Established in Chicago in 1947, it achieved the status of the largest aviation services provider in the United States by 1970. Originally founded as Butler Aviation, the company was rebranded as Butler International in 1974 to better represent its varied business operations. In 1992, Butler International divested its aviation segment, which subsequently merged with Signature Flight Support in 1998. The remaining assets of Butler International were sold in 2009, leading to the company's bankruptcy. Butler America, which later rebranded as Butler Aerospace & Defense, acquired the residual assets of Butler International. Currently, Butler Aerospace & Defense operates under the ownership of HCL Technologies.
