Inv# FM1017 Foreign Paper Money Cat# P-158bForeign Paper Money. Portrait of B. do Rio Branco. P-158b. The initial cruzeiro (Cr$ or C$) served as Brazil's official currency from 1942 until 1967. It succeeded the previous real (plural: réis), which had been utilized since the colonial era, at a conversion rate of Rs $1,000 equating to Cr$1. Subsequently, it was replaced by the cruzeiro novo, with a conversion rate of Cr$1,000 to NCr$1. The term cruzeiro was later reintroduced for two additional currencies that were in official use from 1970 to 1986 (initially referred to as the cruzeiro novo to distinguish it from the earlier version) and from 1990 to 1993. The cruzeiro was subdivided into 100 centavos, a practice that continued with all later Brazilian currencies; however, during the first cruzeiro, denominations below Cr$0.10 were never produced, as coins of less than Rs 100 had not been minted since 1935.
