The Boston National Bank (Charter 408) was a prominent financial institution in Boston, Massachusetts, during the 19th century. It primarily served the city’s expanding commercial and industrial sectors. Established during the era of national banking expansion, it was one of several federally chartered institutions that issued its own currency and provided essential capital to local merchants and businesses.

In 1898, the Boston National Bank was among nine regional banks that merged to form the newly established National Shawmut Bank of Boston. This merger aimed to strengthen their market position against increasing competition. Consequently, the Boston National Bank ceased its independent operations, and its assets and operations were integrated into the Shawmut bank. The Shawmut bank subsequently emerged as one of New England’s largest financial entities for much of the 20th century.
