The Bonanza Colorado Silver Mining Company, often linked to the larger, lively Bonanza mining district in Saguache County, embarked on its illustrious journey in 1880. This was triggered by the discovery of abundant silver ore in the Kerber Creek region. The town of Bonanza City, aptly named “the new Leadville,” experienced a rapid and chaotic influx of prospectors. In the first two years alone, thousands of individuals passed through the area, supporting numerous saloons. Over the years, the district’s mining operations underwent various consolidations into different company structures. Notably, the Rawley Mine emerged as the largest in the district, producing substantial amounts of silver, lead, and copper.
However, mining in the area faced numerous challenges for decades. These included difficult ore deposits, flooding issues, and the unpredictable decline in the price of silver. The district witnessed a significant resurgence in the 1920s. This was achieved through the construction of the Rawley Mill and an extensive 7-mile aerial tramway designed to transport ore. This “second wind” lasted until 1930, when the largest operations were eventually shut down. Following the abandonment of the main mines, a devastating fire in 1937 ravaged much of the town. Today, the once-bustling mining center stands as a ghost town, leaving behind a legacy of abandoned structures, extensive tailings, and ongoing environmental restoration efforts within the Kerber Creek Mining District.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
