The history of the Belize dollar is deeply intertwined with the country’s colonial past as British Honduras. Before the introduction of a localized currency, the region used various foreign coins, including Spanish dollars, British pounds, and Jamaican currency. In 1884, the colonial government made a significant move toward financial independence by introducing the British Honduras dollar, which was officially pegged to the US dollar instead of the British pound sterling. This strategic alignment aligned with the colony’s primary trading patterns with North America. The first official government notes were issued in 1894, establishing a stable paper currency backed by the colony’s growing economy.
A pivotal shift occurred in 1973 when British Honduras was officially renamed Belize, leading to the adoption of the Belize dollar. Following national independence in 1981, the Central Bank of Belize was established in 1982 to assume the responsibilities of currency issuance and monetary policy. Throughout these transitions, the Belize dollar maintained its historic connection to the US dollar. In 1976, the exchange rate was officially pegged at a fixed rate of 2 Belize dollars to 1 US dollar, a stability mechanism that continues to be in place today. Modern banknotes prominently feature Belizean wildlife, historical landmarks, and national heroes, reflecting the country’s rich cultural heritage and sovereign identity.
