James Fenimore Cooper (September 15, 1789 – September 14, 1851) was an American author active during the first half of the 19th century. His historical romances, which portray frontier and Native American life from the 17th to the 19th centuries, established a distinctive genre of American literature. He spent a significant portion of his childhood and the final fifteen years of his life in Cooperstown, New York, a town founded by his father, William, on land that he owned.
Cooper joined the Episcopal Church shortly before his passing and made substantial contributions to it. He studied at Yale University for three years, where he was affiliated with the Linonian Society. After a period spent on a commercial voyage, Cooper enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a midshipman, acquiring knowledge about sailing vessel management that significantly impacted many of his novels and writings. The work that marked the beginning of his literary career was The Spy, a narrative centered on espionage during the American Revolutionary War, published in 1821. He also crafted American maritime stories. His most recognized works include five historical novels from the frontier era, written between 1823 and 1841, collectively known as the Leatherstocking Tales, which introduced the legendary American frontier scout, Natty Bumppo. Cooper's writings concerning the U.S. Navy have been well-regarded by naval historians, although they faced criticism from some of his contemporaries. Among his most celebrated works is the Romantic novel The Last of the Mohicans, frequently considered his masterpiece. Over the course of his career, he produced a wide array of social, political, and historical fiction and non-fiction works aimed at challenging European biases and fostering a unique American art and culture.
