William Tecumseh Sherman (February 8, 1820 – February 14, 1891) was an American soldier, businessman, educator, and author. Sherman was a pivotal Union general during the American Civil War, best known for his command of the Western Theater and his innovative use of "total war." Born in 1820 in Ohio and raised by the Ewing family after his father's death, Sherman graduated from West Point in 1840. Sherman’s legacy is defined primarily by his 1864 March to the Sea, a campaign designed to break the South's psychological and economic will to fight. By capturing Atlanta and marching his troops through Georgia to Savannah, he destroyed infrastructure and supplies, demonstrating that the Confederate government could not protect its citizens. After the war, he served as Commanding General of the Army from 1869 to 1883, overseeing the Indian Wars and the modernization of the military. He famously refused to enter politics, remaining a professional soldier until his death in 1891.
