Atlantic Wharf, situated along the Fort Point Channel in Boston, Massachusetts, boasts a rich maritime and architectural heritage that dates back to the city’s early mercantile era. Initially known as Russia Wharf, it served as the central hub for Boston’s thriving trade with Russia during the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The docks of Russia Wharf regularly witnessed the arrival of goods such as iron, hemp, and sailcloth. Notably, the area was also adjacent to the significant events of the 1773 Boston Tea Party. After the devastating Great Boston Fire of 1872, the land was expanded, leading to the construction of three magnificent Renaissance Revival buildings in 1897 by the renowned architectural firm Peabody and Stearns: the Russia, Graphic Arts, and Tufts buildings. These structures, characterized by their distinct brickwork, cast-iron storefronts, and expansive glass windows, stood as iconic symbols of Boston’s industrial waterfront for decades.
However, as industrial shipping shifted away from the area in the 20th century, these historic waterfront structures fell into severe disrepair. A transformative revitalization led by Boston Properties (BXP) breathed new life into the site, transforming it into a modern, 1.2 million-square-foot mixed-use development aptly named Atlantic Wharf. Completed in 2011, the project meticulously preserved and restored 42 percent of the existing historic structures, including the full exterior facades of the 19th-century mercantile buildings. These historic structures were seamlessly integrated into a new, 31-story glass skyscraper. Atlantic Wharf stands as Boston’s first “green skyscraper,” earning a LEED Platinum certification. This modern development features innovative stormwater filtration systems, Class A+ office spaces, luxurious residential lofts, public art galleries, and vibrant waterfront plazas, creating a harmonious blend of history and modernity.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
