The Arizona Public Service Company (APS) traces its origins back to April 29, 1886, when Japanese immigrant Hachiro Onuki (later known as Hutchlon Ohnick) co-founded the Phoenix Illuminating Gas and Electric Company. This small company, granted the area’s very first utility franchise, initially operated a single gas streetlight in downtown Phoenix. Over the ensuing decades, the company underwent several corporate transformations and rebrandings, eventually becoming the Pacific Gas & Electric Co. of Phoenix in 1906 and later the Central Arizona Light & Power Co. (CALAPCO) in 1920. The modern iteration of the company was officially established on March 1, 1952, when CALAPCO merged with Arizona Edison and Northern Arizona Light & Power, adopting the name Arizona Public Service Company to reflect its expanding regional reach.
Throughout the mid-to-late 20th century, APS experienced rapid expansion to meet the growing energy demands of Arizona’s burgeoning population, which was significantly influenced by the widespread adoption of electric residential air conditioning. To diversify its energy infrastructure, the utility constructed major fossil-fuel plants, including the coal-fired Four Corners Power Plant in the 1960s. However, in 1984, APS underwent a restructuring that led to the sale of its natural gas business and a focus solely on electricity generation. In 1985, the company established a holding corporate structure known as Pinnacle West Capital Corporation. A significant milestone occurred in 1986 when APS began operating the Palo Verde Nuclear Generating Station, which later became the nation’s largest producer of carbon-free electricity. Headquartered in Phoenix, APS currently serves approximately 1.4 million homes and businesses, effectively managing historic peak demands while actively pursuing an ambitious initiative to deliver 100% clean, carbon-free energy by the year 2050.
Stock and Bond Specimens are made and usually retained by a printer as a record of the contract with a client, generally with manuscript contract notes such as the quantity printed. Specimens are sometimes produced for use by the printing company's sales team as examples of the firm’s products. These are usually marked "Specimen" and have no serial numbers.
