In 1889 Elmer Apperson and his younger brother Edgar opened their Riverside Machine Works on Main Street in Kokomo and soon gained a reputation as the best mechanics in town. In 1893 a fellow townsman named Elwood Haynes paid them a visit and offered them a proposition: He owned a one-cylinder two-cycle Sintz marine engine and he wanted help in building a car. The Apperson brothers provided it, and on the Fourth of July in 1894 the car had its maiden test run.
