The initial concepts and designs of automobiles can be traced back to both ancient and medieval periods. In 1649, Hans Hautsch from Nuremberg constructed a carriage powered by clockwork. In 1672, Ferdinand Verbiest developed a small-scale vehicle that operated on steam; however, the first steam-powered automobile capable of transporting humans was created by Nicolas-Joseph Cugnot in 1769. As the 19th century commenced, inventors began to diversify their efforts, leading to the creation of the de Rivaz engine, recognized as one of the earliest internal combustion engines, alongside an early electric motor. Samuel Brown subsequently conducted tests on the first industrially utilized internal combustion engine in 1826, with only two units produced.
