American Airlines, Inc. was established in 1930 through the consolidation of over eighty small, independent regional carriers and mail routes, initially operating under the name American Airways. In 1934, renowned aviation entrepreneur C.R. Smith restructured the company into American Airlines and revolutionized commercial travel by collaborating with Donald Douglas to develop the Douglas DC-3. This iconic aircraft enabled the company to become the first carrier to generate profit solely from passenger traffic rather than government mail subsidies, establishing its primary hub network and pioneering the concept of premium transcontinental service.

Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the carrier solidified its position as a global industry leader through technological advancements and substantial corporate mergers. American Airlines launched the first electronic airline reservation system, SABRE, in 1960 and subsequently introduced the industry’s first frequent-flyer program, AAdvantage, in 1981. Following decades of expansion, including the landmark acquisition of Trans World Airlines (TWA) in 2001, the airline entered a historic merger with US Airways in 2013, creating the world’s largest airline network and securing its presence in global aviation history.
