Alfred Emanuel Smith (1873-1944), Governor of NY for four terms (1919-20) and (1923-28). Known as the "Happy Warrior" he ran for President in 1928 and lost to Herbert Hoover. After his defeat, Smith became President of the firm which owned and operated the Empire State Building in 1929.
