The 26th Year of the Republic of China (1937) $5 Liberty Bond was issued by the Nationalist Government to raise crucial funds during a critical period, particularly after the Second Sino-Japanese War broke out. Authorized by the Ministry of Finance, these bonds were designed to strengthen national defense and economic stability while fostering a sense of patriotic duty among Chinese citizens. The bonds, including the $5 denomination, often showcased artistic designs like traditional architectural motifs, with many intended for long-term investment.

These bonds were marketed alongside larger denominations, forming a series often referred to by collectors as a “suite.” Although the final interest coupons were scheduled to mature as late as 1970, many of these obligations defaulted after the People’s Republic of China was established in 1949.

A bond is a document of title for a loan. Bonds are issued, not only by businesses, but also by national, state or city governments, or other public bodies, or sometimes by individuals. Bonds are a loan to the company or other body. They are normally repayable within a stated period of time. Bonds earn interest at a fixed rate, which must usually be paid by the undertaking regardless of its financial results. A bondholder is a creditor of the undertaking.
