It is situated in the northwestern part of Ohio, approximately 77 miles (124 km) southwest of Toledo and 34 miles (55 km) southeast of Fort Wayne, Indiana. According to the 2020 census, the population was recorded at 11,092. Van Wert is recognized as the principal city within the Van Wert micropolitan area, which is part of the larger Lima–Van Wert–Wapakoneta combined statistical area.

The city of Van Wert derives its name from Isaac Van Wart, who was one of the captors of Major John André during the American Revolutionary War. Known for its peony cultivation, Van Wert has been the host of the annual Van Wert Peony Festival intermittently since 1902. Additionally, Van Wert is notable for being home to the Brumback Library, the first county library established in the United States.
