Edwin Denison Morgan, (1811-1883), merchant, banker, New York legislator, and U.S. Senator. Cousin of Edwin B. Morgan. As Republican governor of New York, 1859-63, he displayed independence and statesmanship, improving New York's credit and giving maximum support to the Lincoln administration in the Civil War. He served with ability as U.S. senator, 1863-69, and was a generous benefactor of Williams College, Union Theological Seminary and several New York City hospitals.
