Incorporated and established in 1879, the Pittsburgh and West End Passenger Railway Company emerged as a crucial early transit link for the rapidly expanding areas west of downtown Pittsburgh. Operating during an era marked by the transition from horse-drawn cars to electric power, the company expanded its reach throughout the late 19th century. In 1894, it acquired the Pittsburgh, Neville Island & Coraopolis Electric Railway, and in 1895, the Pittsburgh, Crafton & Mansfield Street Railway. This acquisition resulted in the creation of a network that connected bustling suburban communities such as Crafton, Mansfield (now Carnegie), and Neville Island to the city proper.

By the turn of the 20th century, the surge of independent traction lines prompted consolidation. In 1898, the West End Traction Co. acquired the Pittsburgh & West End Passenger Railway, which was subsequently absorbed into the Southern Traction Company in 1900. Finally, on January 1, 1902, the company was merged into the massive Pittsburgh Railways Company (PRC). Although it lost its independent corporate identity, the West End routes became an integral part of the PRC’s, and later the Port Authority’s, extensive electric streetcar network that served the region until the mid-20th century.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
