Group of Correspondence.
The Dayton and Michigan Railroad, incorporated on March 5, 1851, connected Dayton to Toledo, facilitating trade between the Ohio River and Lake Erie. As the first north-south line in western Ohio, it provided essential railway connections to towns like Wapakoneta and Lima by 1858. Despite financial struggles, local boosters ensured its completion, spurring rapid industrial growth and doubling the population of some communities within a decade.
Leased in perpetuity to the Cincinnati, Hamilton, and Dayton Railroad (CH&D) on May 1, 1863, the railroad operated as their vital Detroit Division, solidifying its role as a major industrial artery through Ohio. Over the century, it passed through various owners, including the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O), the Chessie System, and eventually CSX. Today, segments of the original route continue to serve as crucial freight, maintaining its historic role in Ohio’s transportation infrastructure.
