The Louisiana Purchase Centennial was celebrated through the 1904 World’s Fair, officially known as the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, held in St. Louis, Missouri, from April 30 to December 1, 1904. Although the treaty marking the 1803 acquisition of over 800,000 square miles from France was signed a year earlier, organizers postponed the opening to ensure the event’s grand scale could be fully realized. Spanning over 1,200 acres in Forest Park, the fair was designed to commemorate the United States’ westward expansion and its emergence as a global power. It attracted nearly 20 million visitors, showcasing early 20th-century advancements in technology, industry, and culture.
The Exposition was a landmark event that introduced numerous innovations to the American public, including wireless telegraphy, early automobiles, and popular foods like the ice cream cone and iced tea. It also hosted the 1904 Olympic Games, the first to be held in the United States. While celebrated as a triumph of civilization and American pride at the time, the fair is also remembered for its complex, sometimes controversial “living exhibits” that showcased indigenous peoples. Although most of the 1,500 structures were temporary, the Palace of Fine Arts was constructed as a permanent building, which still stands today as the Saint Louis Art Museum.
