Mining scene vignette by Smith Brooks Ptg. Co., Denver. This operation was situated in Chaffee County within the Chalk Creek Mining District of Colorado. It was the most significant mine in the area, positioned on the southwestern slope of Chrysolite Mountain, approximately two miles south of St. Elmo, at an elevation exceeding 10,000 feet. According to local lore, a miner, expressing gratitude, named the mine after the nurse who aided in his recovery. The discovery of the mine occurred in 1879, followed by the construction of a mill in 1886. The mine was developed to a depth of 2,000 feet, featuring seven miles of underground workings, and yielded gold, silver, zinc, lead, and copper. The entire Murphy family held claims or locations named in their honor; the Pat Murphy Claim was adjacent to the Mary Murphy, and the Murphy Switch was located on the Denver 7 South Park Railroad. The mine was first incorporated in 1880, focusing on the Pat and Mary Murphy veins. Notably, quarter-inch pink rhombs of gem-quality Rhodochrosite were discovered within the mine. Available in Red or Brown. Please specify color.

The Mary Murphy Mine served as the primary gold extraction site within the Chalk Creek mining district of Chaffee County, Colorado, located in proximity to St. Elmo. This mine was operational from 1870 until 1925, yielding a total of 220,000 ounces of gold, valued at $4.4 million at the time (equivalent to approximately $180 million in 2008), along with significant quantities of silver, lead, and zinc. Two aerial tramways linked the mine to Romley, Colorado, as well as to the Denver, South Park and Pacific Railroad. In 1984, the Historic American Engineering Record documented the existing structures in the vicinity.

Runoff from the abandoned mine into Chalk Creek, a tributary of the Upper Arkansas River, occasionally resulted in fish kills at the Chalk Cliffs Rearing Unit, a state-operated fish hatchery located downstream, including an incident in 1986 that led to the death of 800,000 fingerling trout. In response, the Colorado Division of Minerals and Geology undertook the consolidation of surface waste materials, capping them in a designated “high-and-dry” area on the mill site. This intervention successfully lowered the levels of dissolved metals, preventing further fish kills. Since that time, the site has been utilized as a testing ground for innovative methods to manage harmful drainage from abandoned mines throughout the Colorado Rockies. The Mary Murphy Mine has also become a favored location for off-road vehicle enthusiasts and those interested in ghost towns.

A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
