The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad (B&O) holds the distinction of being the first common carrier railroad in the United States, chartered in 1827 to compete with the newly opened Erie Canal. Fearing that New York City’s water routes would siphon off trade from the Midwest, Baltimore’s civic leaders sought a reliable overland connection to the Ohio River. Construction began on July 4, 1828, with the first stone laid by Charles Carroll, the last surviving signer of the Declaration of Independence. Initially relying on horse-drawn cars, the B&O quickly transitioned to steam power following Peter Cooper’s successful demonstration of the "Tom Thumb" locomotive in 1830.
Throughout the 19th century, the B&O played a pivotal role in American industrial expansion and military logistics, particularly during the Civil War, where its tracks served as a vital lifeline for Union troops and supplies. Despite facing constant raids and sabotage from Confederate forces, the railroad survived and expanded its reach across the Appalachian Mountains, eventually connecting major hubs like Chicago and St. Louis. While the rise of the interstate highway system and air travel led to the decline of passenger rail in the mid-20th century, the B&O's legacy lives on through CSX Transportation, which absorbed the line after a series of mergers in the 1980s.
A stock certificate is issued by businesses, usually companies. A stock is part of the permanent finance of a business. Normally, they are never repaid, and the investor can recover his/her money only by selling to another investor. Most stocks, or also called shares, earn dividends, at the business's discretion, depending on how well it has traded. A stockholder or shareholder is a part-owner of the business that issued the stock certificates.
